In the 17th century
Monarchy golden era of Mengwi Palace, I Gusti Agung Ketut Karangasem, the son
of I Gusti Agung Made Agung, had built a temple in the middle of nutmeg forest
and it was called as Bukit Sari Temple (A small forest full of vegetations).
The myth of this Sangeh Forest has relationship with the eruption of Mount Agung.
Soon, it was known by somebody during the evacuation after the eruption who
called this place as Sangeh. After years, This Forest has become a very
attractive object and also becomes a nature tourism garden, which is also as a
holy area where you can find a temple to worship God.
You can find so many
beautiful plants here because it has been cultivated by some plant types such
as Chico Kecik, Mahoney and guava. This part is then expected to be the food
source for out of 500 monkeys in this forest. The species of monkey which lives
in Sangeh belongs to Macaca fascicularis. This monkeys live in three different
group which are located in east, middle, and west side of Sangeh. Beside discovering
monkeys, you can discover other animals here such as 22 types (species) of birds,
5 mammal types, 3 reptile types, 2 type of amphibians and also 5 type of
arthropods.
Sangeh as a Tourism Object
is open every day, from 7:30 in the morning to 6:00 in the evening. This
tourism object is completed by parking area, toilet, art shops, souvenir shops,
restaurant, footpath, and others.
