Uluwatu Temple: The on the Tip Temple of Coral Reef

How if you discover a temple on the tip of the cliff? Will it be a wonderful scenery? Uluwatu will. Uluwatu is a Hindu temple set on the cliff in the south part of Bali Peninsula. Uluwatu is one of the must visiting destinations in Bali. You will not regret when you step on the path to Uluwatu because you will be served with the beautiful forest and its populations inside. Do not be afraid or surprised if you see big monkeys here because they are some of the populations living in this area. At the end of the path, you will see how beautiful the temple is.

Uluwatu is one of Sad Kahyangan Temple in Bali (six big groups of Bali Temples), which is located in Pecatu Village, Sub district of South Kuta, and Badung Regency or about 25 Km in the southern part of Denpasar. It is located on the coral reef sordid to sea which is about 80 meters above the sea level. It is featured by a small dry forest which is mostly called by Alas Kekeran (interdict forest) which belongs to the temple and dwelt by a lot of monkeys and other species. The name of Uluwatu comes from the word “Ulu” which means “head” and “Watu” which means “stone”. Therefore, Uluwatu Temple means the temple built on tip of coral reef.

On the right and left side of the temple’s building or it is called as “Pelinggih Ida Bagus Ratu Jurit” is located in a group of Uluwatu Temple, there are two stone mangers that look like a boat. When both of them are united, hence, it looks similar with sarcophagus, the famous stone from megalithic era. There was an archaeology omission coming from 16 centuries in firm of arch or winged entrance gate. Winged entrance gate was one of the scarce archaeology omissions. Winged entrance gate that exists in Uluwatu Temple (a period of its making) can be compared with the same one located in mosque complex in Sendangduwur Village, Lamongan, East Java. The period of its making is relevant with the year Candrasengkala found in this inscription. Candrasengkala was founded in the mosque written by the wording “Gunaning Salira Tirta Hayu” which means year 1483 Saka or 1561 Masehi.

If the sarcophagus in “Dalem Jurit” area represents the artifact, hence Uluwatu Temple represents the sanctified place since the era of megalithic culture (About 500 S.M). In the papyrus of Usana Bali, it was mentioned that Mpu Kuturan (The Hindu Priest who spread out the Hinduism in Bali) had built a lot of temples during his journey to discover this island and one of them was Uluwatu Temple.
